Which masters 'selfie' do you like?

"So much was in the hands of techies, setting up complex digital installations and large wall-mounted screens bearing fine-detail images of historic Western self-portraits"

Nigel Hurst, CEO at Saatchi Gallery

Evening Standard

From Selfie to Self Expression charts the interaction between the contemporary obsession with ‘selfies’ and the artistic history of the self-portrait. In the world-famous Saatchi Gallery, tradition meets technology for the first time, producing a textured and thought-provoking exhibition that questions the desire to document the ‘self’ through images.

"In what is probably a world first, Van Gogh and David Beckham, Picasso and Kim Kardashian coexist in the same gallery space."

Gianluca Mezzofiore, Mashable UK

No Mayo jumped at the chance to collaborate with Saatchi Gallery and bring some of their wild ideas to life. The opening room of the gallery has been transformed via the introduction of twenty-five giant ‘mobile phone’ screens, each with an accompanying real-life mobile device (kindly provided by Saatchi’s partner Huawei). The large screens swipe through a loop of famous self-portraits, including works by Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Frida Kahlo, whilst the accompanying mobile devices display Instagram-like versions of the images and invite visitors to ‘tap to like’ their favourite. The paintings are all in constant rotation, immersing visitors in a world of light and motion, and creating a disorientating yet familiar sensation of scrolling, swiping, tapping and liking.

The show’s huge success has resulted in the exhibition being extended until September, so check it out if you get the chance!

Press Reviews

"We know the selfie to be a phenomenon of great inanity and yet it is so imaginatively and richly explored here that the experience while knockabout is pretty knockout."

Matthew Collings, Evening Standard
